Decomposing Numbers
As students build larger and larger numbers in 3rd grade, they need to keep in mind that these numbers can be decomposed, or broken down, in a variety of ways. Beyond simply using expanded form to show the number as a sum of so many ones, tens, hundreds, etc., students can use expanded notation and separate the component parts of the numbers in a variety of ways.
Once you've learned how to decompose numbers in a variety of ways, why not take a crack at this problem from a released STAAR test?
Foundations for Rounding Numbers
While many adults easily remember the algorithm, or short cut, for rounding numbers, they can sometimes forget what rounding numbers actually represents. By using benchmark numbers that are greater than and less than the target number, students can learn to round numbers while keeping a firm grip on their number sense..
