5th Grade Math Review: Day 12

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

In yesterday's post we reviewed spent quite a bit of time on the coordinate plane. If you missed the live stream with the answers, you can watch it here. Today we finish the entire 12-day review with a quick look at Reporting Category 4 - Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy. Remember that on Day 8 of the review we look at Personal Financial Literacy - Taxes.

Creating Dot Plots and Stem-and-Leaf Plots

5th graders should be familiar with both dot plots, which they first learned about in 3rd grade, and stem-and-leaf plots, which they first learned about in 4th grade. Here's a refresher video about these two concepts.

Now you can try your luck with this STAAR released test question.

Solving Data Problems

Whereas the previous section simply looked at representing the same data set with two different representations, now students are asked to solve simple problems by using what they know about dot plots, bar graphs, and stem-and-leaf plots. Here's a video to help you out.

Here's a practice problem that you can use to test your skill.

Students have been learning about bar graphs since the 1st grade. Here's a problem involving a bar graph from a released STAAR test. On the test, it was a griddable item, which meant that students had to bubble in their answer rather than choosing from four answer choices.

Correct Answers Tonight (4/9/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live. If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.

Here's the live stream with the answers and explanations.
